My Civic Duty

Monday, March 14, 2011

It has taken me a while to get going this morning, time change and all. I wanted to do something up-lifting and light-hearted but instead I feel a civic duty coming on. I feel the need to share some personal knowledge.

We all are reeling from the devastation in Japan and the horrific visuals that are being presented, my heart bleeds for them. This however, is not my topic I wish to address.

I do not know about other countries but here in the US the news agencies keep asking us, “What if…in the US?” This is  the subject I want to enlighten some of you on. You know my past career was in architecture, right?! Do you know the first design puzzle you are taught to solve?

Are You Apart of "One"?

Thursday, October 7, 2010

In the gentleness of night they sleep. Their warm, soft bodies lay still against the other and calmness fills the room. There is no need for emotion, no need for senseless wanting; just the need for rejuvenating slumber and the velvetiness of a touch. Can this not be the simplest joy of living?

No they are not lovers. According to all that is written they were not even suppose to be friends. Against all forces of nature, somehow, life long companions they have become. With no preconceived agenda in their heads and listening only to their hearts, the simple feeling to need another cemented them as one. Is this not how it is suppose to be?

No Mommy He is Not Black

Monday, October 4, 2010

“Put your shoes on, we have to go,” the mother instructed. “Mom, where are we going?” the kids all questioned. ”We have to run an errand it won’t take long,” cheerfully the mother responded, “Now come on we have to go.”

Everyone loaded in the car they began their drive out of the neighborhood. The youngest of the three children sat in the back seat opposite her mother, just lost somewhere out the window. “Lynn, what are you looking at?” her mother asked, “isn’t that where your new friend Pete lives?”

A Sunday Relic

Sunday, August 15, 2010

There it sits, intentionally placed, all neatly stacked; it was not meant to be this way. It was not meant for a corner, not meant to be perfectly stacked and yet, there it sat. A lonely, corner keeper, all battered and worn; now was its mission. Oh, what had caused this battering and wear? Why had it survived?

Surely filling an empty void to her living room decor was not the original intent; the girl began to fantasize. Fantasize about how the neatly stacked objects had reached her living room, what contents had they held and more importantly, why were they so battered and worn. Had it been intentional?

Darkness is ........A Friend

Thursday, August 12, 2010

My eyes are open and yet I cannot see, darkness does surround me. The digits on the clock glow like red evil eyes and I look away. Vaguely making out the shears jumbled to the side of each window and the outline of furniture, the darkness starts to weigh heavy. “Why is darkness so heavy?” I question.

Darkness has no enemy; it knows no bounds. Light only masks what darkness already knows and it will gladly wait for the glory of return. Darkness does not sneak, it merely is. Why then should I not be afraid? Why does my heart welcome what many fear?

Veggie of the Year. Hey, Did You Get to Vote?

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

I received an email this morning that honestly has me contemplating what actually is in my salad? I’m sure it was sent as one of those funny, yet statistical attempts to brighten my day but it has left me somewhat perplexed.  What was in this email? Well the title read, “Cucumber; veggie of the year.”

Yes, the cucumber. I did not know we could even cast a ballot for vegetable of the year; maybe I should network more? Any who; let me recap the reasons this green tubular should be vegetable of the year and why now I am so perplexed.

Yes, I am a Renaissance Woman

Friday, July 9, 2010

I once was called a renaissance woman and yes, I know it was meant as a compliment. In fact I took pride in that title for many years. Do you know what it really means to be a renaissance woman?

It is not as easy as it may sound. After all there is no curriculum for graduating to this status. You have no association to join, no continuing education requirements to meet; why you can’t even include it on your resume. So to be a renaissance woman…..

Multi-Tasking: Oprah Was Right

Saturday, June 5, 2010

Multi-tasking is a modern term that we coined only to find out humans cannot do it. Why even Oprah provided us with experts to prove this fact and begged us not to try. Okay I’m a believer; I finally have the proof we humans cannot multi-task. Why am I suddenly a believer, how do I know this to be true?

Yesterday I started the day with a list of tasks I needed to achieve before the weekend and I did want a weekend. My list included grocery shopping, cleaning house, trimming bushes, exercise the dogs and to cook a pleasant dinner. I would learn by the days end that the list was just that, a list.

The Holiday Gods Have Spoken

Thursday, June 3, 2010

I told you I do not make plans for Memorial Day and I did not but the Holiday Gods still spoke to me. They still made their appearance and put an end to my one planned event, a canoe trip. No worries I took it all in stride, I came away with some valuable tidbits of knowledge. Know what I learned over the Memorial Day Holiday?

I learned that two five-foot tall women are not tall enough for loading a canoe onto a vehicle. I also became aware canoes do not fit all vehicles, some are not wide enough and some are just too short. That if you insist on loading it into a short vehicle you will end up with what looks like a canoe sail and no, you do not have enough rope for this. Blasted Holiday Gods.
