What Time Is It?

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

Somewhere between evening twilight and darkness, time blurs reality with shadows. It is the time when angels lag behind and evil knows it cannot be seen, you feel small. Do you know this time?

It is the time of day when the wickedness of the world seeps in your room and transforms itself to mystical, dancing pillars of mist. The angels watch, far in the distance but the dancing mist obscures their view. A shadow flinches in the corner, did it actually move?

Reality has blurred with the shadows and they enjoy the deception. You hear voices from everywhere and then nowhere. Your senses have stranded you at the door and nothing about your existence seems it can be trusted.

A pillar of mist rises from the left and calls to you. Speaks of evil things and shocking as it is, you understand. The angels, still standing in the distance, know they must wait. Darkness has not fallen, this my friend is your bewitching hour.

It is at this moment you realize the bewitching hour is all about you. It is up to you to decipher the shadows, not heed the unknown voices and above all not fall victim to the mist. Okay, “So what is real?”

Somewhere from deep within you muster courage and slip the covers ever so slowly down from your head. Your heart tells you the mist does not work in the light find a laugh and from your lips springs a giggle. Then in an involuntary motion  your arm reaches for the light.

It is with the illumination you truly can laugh. Your worn out brain forgot you purchased a room humidifier. The mist was mechanically produced, the dancing shadows are the curtains and the unknown voices are the television you left on in the other room.

I think I need a nap.

Grinning from ear to ear as I remember when I first moved into this house...the filters would stick to the vents and release when the air shut off. Sounded like footsteps coming down the hallway. Scared the bejeebers out of me!

Hope you find rest today after your fitful night. Happy Wednesday! ☺

I'm sorry you had such a restless night but I have to laugh as I can so imagine this same thing happening to me! This is beautifully written, in addition to making me smile. Here's hoping you are able to catch a nap today.

Great imagery. I know the bewitching hour all too well. You’ve certainly got to watch out for those shadowy, evil curtains.

Hope you catch up with your sleep soon.

Nightmares and dark thoughts seem so silly and trivial in the stark sunlight. That is until the sun begins to set once more. :)

This was well done Jules- I was not expecting there to be a rational explanation to all of it. :)

Very clever! Is this one from experience? I wouldn't recommend one of those ambient noise machines, Jules. Who knows what you'd imagine then!

Yes, I've known this time...and I know what kind of drugs I was taking.

Naps are good, the waking in confusion can be hell.

Hilarious! I can so see my imagination going with this one! Funny too that I also posted something about shadows tonight. Only mine wasn't original (except for the deer picture that I took. :-)... My was trying to get to someone who's 'hiding in the shadows.' I'll explain later. ;-)

I hope you got your nap!

Anonymoussaid,

Very well done! *I* was spooked - and remembered my childhood when such "imaginings" were oh so common.

I laughed at your very clever ending!
