Trick or Treat

Friday, October 28, 2011

Last week was my birthday week and before we get all carried away THANK YOU for all the wishes. I spent it raking leaves and then flat on my back for 3 days with vertigo, which is why I'm just making it back.

In the spirit of the holiday I thought I would share both trick and treat with you, a day with my granny. Been a while since I wrote about her and believe me when I say, a day with her reverberates trick or treat.

Case 1: We (Mom and I) walk into her apartment and at the same time, "What is that smell?" "Granny what did you have for breakfast?" "A hard boiled egg." "well, what is that smell, did you burn something?" "Why yes honey, did you know bread will burn in a microwave?" Walking back in the kitchen I tell mom it was bread, mom turns and holds out her hand. Okay folks it was not bread and we still aren't sure what was in the microwave.

Case2: Granny complained all week about her neck itching. There is nothing there. First thing out of her mouth as we get in the car, "My neck is itching I need to get this checked."  Without even thinking, "Granny, it might be fleas. You have been hanging out with the only man with a dog." "Well can I get dipped?"

Case 3: A day out with Granny always includes lunch at a place we affectionately call "The Hog Trough," an all-you-can-eat buffet. Two things always happen. No matter what I put on her plate, I give her a sampling of everything, I always sit down with something on my plate that looks good and I lose it.

Case 4: A trip to Walgreens (drug Store). Every week and each week she heads to the sock aisle looking for nylon socks they have not been made since the last depression. Then it is cards because 2 boxes of unused cards is not enough. We can't forget nuts and ice cream, it is like taking a child to the grocery store.

Case 5: The return home. Granny fell earlier in the week, nothing serious but she fell and we were trying to figure out who came to her rescue. She had told us; Julie, Jennifer, and Janice, who was it? I ran into the Julie and asked her, "We don't want to cause trouble, just say thank you." Julie fessed up, she had come to her rescue and that when she found her she was as happy as could be but...

My parting mental image. My frail 92 year old grandmother had fallen in the laundry basket and could not get out. Think kid in a swimming pool stuck in a donut float, legs sticking up wiggling to get out. Now insert my grandmother in a laundry basket and you have my mental image.

Happy Friday and have a great weekend!

Happy Birthday!

Your grandmother sounds like a ball to be around. I am sure it's a laugh a minute. Making memories.

Sorry you were laid up following your birthday yard work. My Grandmother's B/Day was the 25th and I thought about her all day, even though she died many years ago. I like you Scorp's. :) What fun to be able to take your Granny out for the things she enjoys.

Belated Happy Birthday, Jules!! And, sorry to hear you got laid up.

Having read this, I began thinking back to my grandmothers, both of whom I could write books about. But none of my memories can hold a candle to your grandmother getting stuck in the laundry basket.

You have a great weekend too

Happy Birthday.

I can't even imagine falling into a laundry basket, and then not being about to get out. It doesn't make me look forward to getting old.

Your grandma is so lucky to have you.

Aww, I'm sorry you ended up with vertigo, not exactly a great way to spend your birthday. :(

I can so relate to the Granny adventures. I love her visit to the drug store and the nylon socks. My Gran always wore those.

I hope you have a nice weekend. I love the Halloween dog picture!

Sorry to hear you had vertigo. Glad you are better now. :) I love your grandmother, her outlook is wonderful. I remember when my grandmother washed the dishes and put all the silverware in pots and pans instead of the silverware drawer.

So sorry to hear you were laid up for 3 days. Think of me with 'double' surgery boots on (for 2 weeks) trying to get around. I hope that 'mental imae' makes you feel better. LOL

Your grandma is a Hoot!!! Love, love, love your stories about her!!

Have a beautiful rest of the weekend!!

As usual, you left me with a lot of entertaining mental images. Except for the mystery microwave item. That one I don't want to think about.

Happy belated birthday, Jules. That sucks, though, that you were flattened by vertigo. I hope you've fully recovered from that. Hmm... maybe a birthday cake had been in your Granny's microwave???

I'd say her age entitles her to doing all sorts of weird things. The laundry basket it a problem and the smell. I feared it might be the dog. My mother is 90.

Happy (belated) birthday!! the laubndry basket story reminds me of the time when I was a kid and some nefarious male left the toilet seat up - of course I fell in, and it was a struggle to hoist myself out again.
Leaving the seat up is now a deal-breaker no matter WHAT the guy has going for him!

Never had vertigo, but I did see the movie. Wonder if your Granny was experiencing some vertigo when she fell in the laundry basket. Granny sounds like more fun than I could stand.
Oh, and Happy Birthday!
