Let’s Go to the Fair

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

This post is in regards to state fairs and up front I want to say in NO way is this a slight on the tragedy in Indianapolis. My heart goes out to the victims and families.

Before that though I had been thinking of attending our state fair, it starts tomorrow. As a child I use to love going to the fair; all the visual stimulation, the melting pot of aromas, and of course all the freebies.

The thought occurred to me that each day the fair changes, how am I to pick the best day for my visit? What day would host the shows I really wanted to see? Yes, I let my fingers tickle the keys over the internet in search of what I deemed worthy shows. I’ll tell you right now, just slap me and knock the shock right off my face.

The shows I wanted to see are not those on the main drag or least they weren’t when I was a kid. What I wanted to see were those freak shows off the beaten path, the ones that made you think Boris Karloff was lurking in the wings. Do remember those?

The man who breathed fire or the lady who swallowed swords? The 600 pound man or the bearded lady? What happen to the mummy that most certainly was the missing link to humanity?

Though I must admit the animals were always my favorite. The chicken with two heads, the calf with five legs, the alligator with two tails, you get my meaning. What happen to all these?

Doing my research I could find no shows at this year’s fair that spark an interest. There wasn’t even a mentioned of the man who rode his motorcycle in that steel ball.  Bummer!

What happen to all my fellow freaks? Wikipedia told me. Most of the animals were stage props, glad to learn that one. The man who breathed fire became a welder, the lady who swallowed swords now works at a knife shop in Knoxville, TN and the 600 pound man?

He married the bearded lady and they have a new reality show coming out this fall.

Now just in case you needed a rainbow for this hump day… Joplin, MO is going back to school today. That little community just goes to show what we all can achieve when we help our fellow man.

RainbowPeace….

Illinois shouldn't even have fairs anymore with the financial situation the state is in, plus it sucks anymore. The music acts they get aren't worth it. I've never bothered to go to it, not worth the drive.

I have been thinking the same thing. I haven't been to a State Fair for decades but for some reason I was thinking I'd like to go and see the farm animals, how weird is that? And eat overpriced cotton candy and corn dogs.

Sorry you can't find any State Fair Freaks. You'll have to resort to the morning news. That should do it for you.
Hope you find the cotton candy, corn dogs and fizzy drinks. Have fun.

I love the fair, mostly for the food and the firworks. We have lots of local fairs as well which feature greased pig contests, arm wrestling championships, punkin' chuckin', lawn mower races...freaky enough for me!

I always like watching the old cars race and run into each other. Engine fires, destruction, mayhem.

Does that make me slightly sick?

If your fair has a slide.... I'll be there. I love fairs we have had quite a few locally in the past few months with out town being a holiday resort.

Thanks for your comment, much appreciated.

We've been to the County fair a few times (it's right down the street) but never a State Fair, that I know of. It sounds like they used to be a wild experience. :)

All the State Fair freaks are working in D.C. these days. Maybe a tour of the U.S. Capitol Building would accommodate your urges. ...But you'll have to wait 'til they get back from their un-earned vacations!

I was thinking of obvious whereabouts of the sideshows but your answers are so much better -- and so much funnier ;o)
You haven't lost your touch. Your mind maybe but not your touch.

Go to the fair, maybe the things you seek will be in the crowd.

Jilda and I were talking abou the state fair this morning.
The last time we went, the guy that guessed your age was about to guess Jilda's age when I walked up.
She's always looked young for her age. When the guy saw me, he nailed her age.
She was miffed at me for the rest of the night and no amount of cotton candy could bring her around :(

Joplin DID go back to school today and I know they are ready to get some norm after a terrible unnormal (is that a word?) summer.

I haven't been to a fair in several years, but I often think about going. When I was younger my family used to work a lot of fairs with our juggling act. I loved those times since if we were working the grandstand shows we'd only work twice a day and the rest of the day was for having fun.

They used to have really fat people that you could pay to see in the side shows. Now you can see them for free at Walmart. I seem to see a lot larger people these days than I recall seeing when I was a kid.

I don't remember all those sideshows, but maybe it's because I always did the county fair, because the state fair was too long a drive. But, like Bossy Betty, I do enjoy the pig races! And I like to see all the animals, too -- who knew there were so many kinds of rabbits and chickens? I also sort of like to see peoples' entries in things like the table setting contest.
