Hillbillies and Art Museums

I thought in honor of summer I would share a memory with you. I was writing an email to a friend and it reminded me of one of my many escapades which now is a real laughable memory. Do you have memories like that?

I have driven through Atlanta speeding but never before visited. Not this time. This time I would get time to visit the famed High Art Museum with Ms. Twister in tow.

The High is an architectural art piece all to itself, a beautiful, in its time, contemporary bit of construction. This is the High.

With tickets in hand, Ms. Twister and I entered the huge, open, five storied rotunda. The first couple of floors already crowded with people making their way to the top, I suggested we do the opposite.

Ms. Twister had never visited such a prominent art museum I discovered on our way up. “Oh, you are in for a treat. They are holding a pre-Columbian exhibit.” I should have known, by the look on her face, I was the one in for the treat.

Stepping out of the elevator we emerged in a modern exhibit of expressionism. Basically it was a canopy bed with polyester clothing and a disco ball over the canopy, titled; Disco. What an introduction to modern art. She was confused and I thought it not worth explaining, on we went.

We ambled down through the furniture of art, the black and white photo exhibit and the pop art section. All the while I explained each classification and watched her nose turn up in confusion. She has great facial expression when it comes to new things.

We had made our way to the third floor, the floor which held the pre-Columbian exhibit. Numerous painted urns, jugs and a slew of hand carved statues was all it consisted of.

I did not mean too but I got ahead of her by 15 feet. I should have known not to leave her alone and I guess she forgot we were in a five story open air rotunda.

The statues were all male and I noticed a mother and daughter just behind us slowly exploring the pieces. The mother was taking great strides to explain the use of nudes in art. Guess I should have done the same.

Before I could shift my eyes from them to Ms. Twister I heard my name called out. Do I need to remind you we are in a large round room where even a whisper carries, well I am.

Ms. Twister was standing in front of an ugly little guy, beautifully painted but shall we say, very glad to see a lady. So what does the lady say as she stares at the happy to see you little guy? And by little I mean the statue not his happiness.

Echoing for all the museum to hear she declares, “Jules, he has a peter!”

Needless to say we snuck through the rest of the exhibits and this friend is what happens when hillbillies visit art museums.

It’s National Flip Flop day so wear them in pride and hey, go for it, ask for the afternoon off. It is a holiday! Have a great weekend, I’m off to work.

Peace…

Oh dear! Too funny!

On one modern art experience when my kids were young, my youngest who was about 3 at the time, promptly wanted me to carry her and she fell asleep for the duration of the visit. I really got tired carrying her the whole time. I don't think I could do that now.

Hilarious. Yes, there are lots of Peter's in this world and not only in an art museum! I have the feeling Ms. Twister would crack me up great time yet I would enjoy the pre=col with you!
Have a wonderful weekend.

Ok, Jules, I will definitely remember this hysterical event the next time I ponder taking a hillbilly to an art museum...but gosh, give Ms. Twister a break-lots of things to get excited about in a museum :) At least you were able to leave the scene of the crime!

I really did LOL at this! Especially since I believe I've seen this "little guy" and know just what you mean about his happiness. If it's any consolation, I have a sister who probably would have posed for a picture with it that would have gotten us kicked out. Have a great weekend!

Anonymoussaid,

Leave it to hill folk to say something funny like that. And I'll wear my flip flops with dignity today in some fancy schmancy place.

I'll second the person who said it could have been worse! My kids are terribly honest and manage to bust out with all sorts of things in public. My daughter is especially good at making interesting statements while in a bathroom stall. Can't tell you how many times I've heard giggles from different stalls. It can be rather fun, too.

and I are joining forces in another challenge. We're going to visit and comment at each of the participants, starting with the reflections post. We hope you'll join us!

LOVE it! I hope all is well with you and that life is treating you kind.
FYI, when I was eleven, myself and several friends got kicked out of the museum in Chicago for having too much fun.

At least she didn't pretend to do something obscene and then demand you take a picture. Oh wait. That's something I would do...

She declared the obvious in a child like fashion. OMG, that must of been some fun, trying to sneak out...lol
Reminds me of visiting Canada and my Dad went in this hut and peed in Indian pottery. He had my brother guard outside. I thought my Mom was going to kill him~ It could be worse!

What happens when hillbillies visit art museums - ha!

My daughter, around age 3, used to greet strangers like this:

"I have a cat named Shaggy. Sometimes I call her Pepper. When I was born, I wouldn't stop crying. My mom held me, but I wouldn't stop crying. My dad held me, but I wouldn't stop crying. The doctor held me, but I wouldn't stop crying. The nurse held me, but I wouldn't stop crying. Then I made a big poop, and went right to sleep."
