E is for Egg

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

Haven’t we all heard or referenced the question, “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” I personally believe it was the chicken but let me explain. I’m taking a different approach to the question, evolution.

Every living thing we know today has evolved in some fashion. Adapt and survive is our world in general. My assumption is the chicken came first, because there is no proof to assume otherwise, and here is what I think evolved.

The chicken, being the meat choice of many a healthy diet seemed doomed. For in the beginning the chicken had no defense and was at the mercy of fat, slow hunters; in step evolution.

At some point the chicken evolved into a fight-back bird. By that I mean its evolutionary attempt at flying did not work out to well. Through the years and many attempts at different evolutionary tactics the chicken evolved into a “baffle and run” bird. Thus the egg was born.

The chicken figured out, if it could produce a by-product and expel it at the appropriate time it stood a chance. So here stood early man baffled and encircling the newly laid by-product, all the while, the chicken was snickering and running like mad.

What I want to know… which Neanderthal decided to pick up a by-product from a chickens butt and eat it?

Peace…

It was Ringo Starr in that movie with Barabara Bach. They were cavemen and the egg rolled into a hot spring and cooked sunny side up. :-)

Baffle and run....I like that.

Exactly! I always want to know what made people start eating a certain type of food. What person picked ginger from the ground and decided it was edible?

You sure do make a valid point here. And considering that the early man evolved into modern man (maybe to find a solution to the bafflement caused by the laying of the egg by the chicken), this hypothesis might develop into a full fledged principle as well.

Nice post.

I am personally (and rather strangely, I know) afraid of eggs. I won't eat them, I won't cook with them, I won't even buy them. Sometimes, depending on the way it's cooked, I have a hard time sitting at a table with people who are eating eggs.
