Can You Hear Me Now?

Friday, March 11, 2011

Can You? Have you ever been in a situation where you, in your mind, were following a conversation only to be jolted by someone screaming, “Are you even listening?”

There is a study out there that suggests we are losing the art of real conversation. We have, in this modern age, taken the old phone company adage and changed it to read, “Let your fingers do the talking.” We converse via social media. However, it is not the lost art of conversation that bothers me but rather the dulling of our senses.

Is it really okay to put your worst nightmare on Facebook/Twitter and except merely a written, “I’m sorry” from hundreds of your so-called closet friends and family?

Has it become the norm to choose watching the caged bird sing on YouTube rather than actually experiencing that bird sing?

Has the general participation in life been reduced to, “only if my gadget is not buzzing, blaring or playing music?” Should it happen to be, “Well, excuse me from life.”

I know this sounds like a rant on technology but rather quite the opposite, I love technology. I do understand the need, use and importance of technology but I equally enjoy life. Life is just that, an all-encompassing journey and in my mind shall never be confined within an electronic box.

I feel remorse when a friend or family member has forgotten that no crisis is too large to ask for a real shoulder. That yes, I do actually listen to oral conversation and that I honestly care. I will never hold my PC while it cries over the death of its hard drive; that is just a fact.

I feel a deep loss when anyone tells me they would rather watch a video rather than experience the actual event. Watching a video of a walk in the park will never replace feeling the sun on your skin, the leaves blow across your feet or the rain soaking you to the bone.

These are the experiences we drawn from while watching, listening or feeling any situation. This is life. It is not always easy or pretty, it comes not instantaneously, and it will not be put on hold. It must be devoured with all our senses and cherished.

So excuse me if I did not catch your Youtube video or I missed something on Facebook/Twitter, Oh and my cell phone is so old it will not text message.

I am from the old school, the one who taught, “All good things in moderation.” I graduated from the wild women school of living; I want to climb that mountain myself. I want you to cry on my shoulder and wipe away your tears and it drives me crazy that so many of you my blogging friends need a good night out with a wild woman and I cannot get there.

Now that is technology I could use. When are they going to invent that “Beam me up” gadget, my friends need me!

Please for the weekend hit the power off button, walk away from that unfinished WIP and go devour some life.

In closing I give you “Wild Women Don’t Get The Blues.”

Have a great weekend and Peace…

Yay! I have a prepaid phone that does nothing but...operate as a phone! And I thought I was the only one. Technology should be an enhancement to life, not a substitute. Bravo, Jules, for encouraging everyone to pry their fingers from their gadgets and use them to actual touch the world.

I had to deactavate mine before going away, I have it up and running again but can't find you to ask to be your friend.

Have a good week-end.

Great idea!

I can't text message on my phone, either. And I pretty much prefer it that way--I never liked the idea of having to take out a phone out and read messages that might or might not be significant. :P

Have a wonderful weekend!

Great post! I love tech, but I'm happy being just a bit behind everyone. I do not have text capability on my phone, so my friends have to actually talk to me. But, I do love the way I can reach out to anyone anywhere via social media, friendships that would not be possible without tech.

You said it! I am always so amazed, and saddened, when I go somewhere like the mall and see all of these people walking around talking on the phone. It's so weird. Why go anywhere if you're just going to walk around talking on the phone.
Or I've been around people who are staring and pecking away at their little hand-held devices or laptops while we should be visiting one another. Sometimes they don't even notice when someone says something to them. To me it's rude and just plain weird.

I still miss writing letters in ink rather than typing emails, although I can now type faster than I write with ink.
Technology is sure changing how things work, but still I prefer a paperback to e-paper.
There are some things that should be done the old school way just for the fun of doing it the old school way.

Jules, nice commentary.

I love technology and I use it. However, it doesn't take the place of real interactions with people, places, or things.

I have some wonderful cyber friends and some I've met up with and done fun things with or talked on the phone with--real conversation, yay. I love a good conversation.

As for texting...not my favorite thing. I use it only for short things--don't forget to bring home your science book tonight, son. Honey, I know you're in a meeting, could you pick up some bread on the way home? Hey sis, I'll be there in about 30 minutes...that sort of thing.

Live your life don't merely exist. Experience it, feel it, enjoy it.

nice, i am not that important where i do not have to be on the phone all the time... reality is i just would be talking to the voices in my head and i do not need a phone for that...

What you said about conversation is so true. But it was like that before high tech gadgets.

Sadly, then as now, people only waited for you to pause to catch your breath to leap into the void with what they had been wanting to talk about : themselves!

Like the starlet of the 40's said to the ear-weary movie producer : "Enough about me. What do you think about me?" LOL. Roland

Anonymoussaid,

I think the issue is insecurity for some people. I was at an employment agency today and found that half the people couldn't just sit there and wait. They had to play on their cell phones and I don't think it's from boredom. People feel awkward unless they're doing something, especially if they're alone. That's just my theory! I could be way off base...

Jules, it is very true. I spend tons of my life on the computer and don't walk away much. Notice me writing this on Sunday :( I did, though, take Friday and Saturday as mostly computer-free days, so maybe that counts.

If you're ever farther north, I would love a wild woman to take me out. A good dash of whiskey and Coyote Ugly might do me some good :) Ha!

Hope you had a nice weekend.

PS--On Thursday, there's a St. Patty's blogfest that I'm participating in, and I'm dedicating my post to you for your inspiration. Hope you can stop by :)
