Did You Get What You Needed?

Friday, November 26, 2010

The past couples of months have been extremely hard for me. Personal demons, soul aching and then I got a traffic ticket. At one point I could do nothing but laugh until I cried, that did not help. Do you know the song “Can’t always get what you want?”

Yesterday I got what I needed.

Do you know what it means to serve food to someone who has none?

Have you ever tried to meet the eyes of someone who has had life kick them like a soccer ball? A soul wishing not to be seen.

Have you ever tried to hand a plate to someone who shrinks? Self worth all but vanished.

Have you ever tried to hear a muted “thank you” when humility has cut their tongue out?

This was Thanksgiving.

I served food to someone who had none. We became two souls joined by a plate and a spoon. Exchanging smiles.

I met the eyes of a soul not wishing to be seen. It felt like I caught a glimpse of a unicorn. That mythical being, which there in that faded reflection now hid.

I heard the muted, “thank you.” There stood a shrinking girl, mouthing the words,” thank you” and all the while just needing a hug. From my serving position I could only respond, “you are welcome and present a smile.

Yesterday I performed my community service and was truly blessed. What I thought of, as an injustice was actually heaven sent. I did perform my service because of the traffic ticket but the act of sharing is what my heart felt.

Though I had been having an emotional tough time I dare say I have been experiencing nothing next to those I served. Like the song says, “If you try sometime, you find; you get what you need.”

I will not be making the rounds tonight or tomorrow, tomorrow I actually get to eat turkey. :) Have a truly thankful weekend and I’ll catch everyone Sunday.

And now… The Rolling Stones

Jules, a beautiful writing and truly heart-felt. I think you truly got what you needed; what we ALL need...a reminder that things aren't that bad if they can get worse.
Take good care of yourself; I'm sending positive thoughts!

This was so well written, and it made my heart ache. Maybe it was forced *service* but it still made a difference to you and those you served.

Hi Jules,
Beautiful post; I so want to volunteer. My daughter did, made turkey sandwiches on Tues and Wed handed them out to the homeless. She truly saw raw, soul filled people. A woman that was barefoot, bothered her the most.
It changed her view of our world.
I truly am going to try to get my whole family involved in some form of volunteering. It is a gift, for mankind, and an act of kindness to those who have so few. This is the true spirit of the holidays! I am so glad you participate; I know it lighted your heart and what you gave, smiles served with a spoonful of hope and warmth, during their meal, meant so much~ xXx

Jules,
The best way to pull yourself out of the funk you're in is to help someone else. I'll be the first to admit, it's not easy. Sometimes it's hard to even find the strength to crawl out of bed and face a new day.

Some days it's easier to just stay in bed and laugh crazily until we cry. But somewhere - down really deep - we know. That hinting voice in the back of our mind saying that it's ok.

I'm so glad you got what you needed. I wish we could bottle that feeling.
