Monday's Monster

Monday, September 27, 2010

Eye to eye she stood locked with the beast. The surprise encounter had turned to a stalemate; neither felt a need to blink. Tall in stature the creature stood with a sense of arrogance and yet it was curious. “I am not impressed,” it seemed to say, as it lowered its head and gave a snort. She would not flinch. “Why are you so mean?” she demanded.

The creature had scented her out, the snort a sign of unimpressed interest. Now with each breath its nostrils began to ebb and flow. Heavy air hung around them like syrup in the sky; breathing was not easy. “You know I must do this?” she quizzed as the beast just stood its ground.

The stalemate was unyielding, her fear, she was not surmounting. “You know I must conqueror you?” she softly spoke. With no sign of comprehension the beast began to paw at the ground as if to charge. “Others may fear you but I do not,” speaking out loud as if to reassure her soul. “Why do you fight me?”

Her knees began to tremble, her muscles taught with fear; she contemplated a course of action. Once more she visually surveyed the beast and looked way beyond its monstrous stare. There hidden deep within the river deep eyes was a feeling, a soul; she saw a weakness.

”You sense my fear, don’t you?” she asked and with all her might slowly lifted a hand. The beast was not so sure. She could physically see the apprehension and terror manifest outward on the creatures face. “I mean you no harm, see?” she calmed the creature and extended out her hand.

”Easy, I’m offering you my hand.” With caution she continued, slowly inching closer and closer to the beast. Spellbound the creature was full of curiosity and once again it took the stance of arrogance. “You are not arrogant, can’t we just be friends?” softly she spoke.

As the last few words left her mouth she could feel the heaviness in the air vanish. Her hand now within an inch of the beast, she emptied her mind of all uncertainties and allowed herself only the fear of what was to come.

Contact, she had touched the beast. By over coming her fear she had felt the beast. With the feeling came knowledge and with the knowledge came a tear. “You are not a beast and love is all you seek” she whispered.

In a soft caress, her hand had deleted all apprehension and fear from what was once know as beast. The simple act of facing a fear, looking beyond what was once perceived and reaching out a hand in kindness a light had been shed on all that was not real.

My analogy here was what I witnessed the first time I introduced Ms Twister to a horse. Though she conquered her fear, she drove it like bike and I should have told her it had no hand brakes.

A Happy Monday to all.

Excellent writing! And I suppose a horse can appear like a beast to one who's never ridden.

Quite a colorful analogy it was. This came just after I had read some angry emails that signal a potential conflict in my community of which I would unfortunately become a part if some calmheaded resolusion is not found. I will continue to try to be the voice of reason among the clamorings of self interests. You calmed me a little bit.

Great writing. Fear is well...fearful. No matter who you are man or beast, fear is hard to face.

what a lovely story! Fear is nothing but lack of knowledge, and usually a frightening attitude is in fact, fear.

I agree with so many above--I'm sure we all had our own idea of what the beast was!
