My Hospital Observations

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

First and foremost I want to express a huge THANK YOU for all the kind words and prayers regarding my father, they worked. While he is still in the ICU, he is doing well, breathing tube removed and sitting up.

While the past five days have not been enjoyable for me I have kept my eyes open. I have seen bad things; I have seen good things and some of it you just had to laugh at. I’m still recovering from this emotional journey and I think it best just to report some of my observations.

First thing, my 92-year-old grandmother is a wonderful passenger. Never flinched a muscle as I drove like a NASCAR racer returning her to the assisted living community. (She was with us when we received the call.) I swear I heard her say “Wee” under her breath more than once though and it did take her a few minutes to unwrap her fingers from the crazy bar.

Speaking of elderly, never leave an elderly patient to do their own check-in. Apparently someone assumed their relative would check them self in while they parked the car. The dropped off relative thought it their opportunity to escape and tried.

Automatic doors are only automatic if you push the button. Forget and it is painful.

Mary Poppins is in our family tree. No matter what was required or wished for, one of the women in my family had it in their bag. Of course we then went on a scavenger hunt but they always had it.

Hospitals are the only place I know where people will gladly give you a dollar for two quarters. The exact cost to get your car out of the parking lot; by the third day I did not blame them.

Automatic toilets (Loo) do not know I use them. Either I do not weigh enough or they just enjoy scaring the bejeezus out of me.

Hospitals are wasteful. I now have enough blood pressure cuffs to make all three of my furry friends floatation devices.

All the ugly, uncomfortable chairs reside in the ICU waiting room. I know this because I spent 12 hours there and I swear concrete is softer.

Hillbillies suffer withdraw symptoms from biscuits and gravy.

And finally, if you are into astrology and missed the full moon, just stroll down a hospital wing. It rises there nightly.

Again thank you all for the kind words and prayers. You blog followers are the greatest. I just needed to find some humor from my week that transpired. I’ll be around but sporadically.

Peace…..

And if you do make flotation devices for your furry friends, please take pictures.

So glad your dad is coming along.
Your observations are something else. When I ride with my grandson I rife like your grandma! Hush up! No way I'm 92 (God bless her.).

Glad to hear the chipper news. And a merry heart is like good medicine. Something like that.

Jules, I'm so glad your dad is better. Hospitals give me the heebiejeebies. But, you're right. There is humor to be found there, too.

good to hear things are getting better. Yes, hospitals can be bizarre places. They can be like nightmares some times, and like strange dreams at others. The hospital experience never seems very real to me. It's a world of its own.

Good to know your Dad is doing better!
Hospitals save and suck the life out of you! I was in one once for 3 wks... You finally get to sleep and they wake you up. Why couldn't you take my temp, bp, when I was asleep? Love the full moon comment....
Nice, you still have your humor! Yes, humor is everywhere~
