Yes, I am a Renaissance Woman

Friday, July 9, 2010

I once was called a renaissance woman and yes, I know it was meant as a compliment. In fact I took pride in that title for many years. Do you know what it really means to be a renaissance woman?

It is not as easy as it may sound. After all there is no curriculum for graduating to this status. You have no association to join, no continuing education requirements to meet; why you can’t even include it on your resume. So to be a renaissance woman…..

Means you will never be allowed to play Trivial Pursuit. Everyone knows while your actual head is small; it is very well organized and can access a vast array of topics. So no games for you, you become the official chip and dip filler. Oh, but I know that.

These same people whom are afraid to play games with you, soon realize you are more human than Google. You will continually get phone calls and emails that always begin with, “Why is,” and “How do I?” Not that you mind, you just wished it would count towards your page ranking.

Learning to be a renaissance woman means you have spent a lifetime self-educating yourself on topics that once were not for women to know. Only to find you must shelve this knowledge, bite your tongue off and live with the fact you will repair it correctly later, all as not to bruise egos. No, you do not own stock in duct tape.

Once you achieve your status of Renaissance woman you realize it
has no worldly value except to boost your own self worth. There is no way it can become a career or be included on a resume.

A perspective employer does not care that you can repair most mechanical pieces of equipment; they have people for that. You will never be able to explain that it is cheaper to have one person who can repair copiers, PC’s, toilets, and then cater a business lunch? Even if you did wash your hands first.

They do not care you are self-educated. When asked what college you attended they are taken back by, “Wanted it know, could not find someone and so I figured it out on my own.” I really need to create a Photoshop diploma from this school.

While being a renaissance woman has kept me from many a reindeer game and has yet to improve my page ranking, I’m not giving up hope. I have yet to receive a diploma in renaissance but am sure one day I will be able to grandfather in. So this Renaissance woman….

is off to snake the sink, start the laundry, design a computer desk, plan dinner and gather more renaissance knowledge.

Do you know anyone looking for or hiring Renaissance Women?

While duct tape stock isn't a requirement, I think it should come with bonus points ;-)
