Coney Island Hotdog Contest: Hum?

Monday, July 5, 2010

I have one more day left to the holiday weekend, what will I do? Before I embark on some un-planned outing I have to ask you a question. Do you know who won the hotdog-eating contest? Have you ever seen one of these events?

I personally have not attended such an event but I have seen the results on television. Yesterday as I watched the proud winner raise his trophy belt and lift his bottle of pepto I thought how wrong this was on so many levels.

Exactly where did the idea of stuffing as many tube shaped, unhealthy, meat products down your throat in 5 minutes, come from and why? Did it start as a dare or was it a marketing ploy to attract children? Could this be another one of those guy things?

Did a bunch of kids one day revolt and refuse to eat as mother had said. Did they say, “oh no, we will chew with our mouths open, see exactly how much we can fit in there, then not chew at all and do it without choking.” It became a tradition because instead of getting a time out someone took a picture and thus a contest was born.

What better way to attract children than to show them a totally wrong way to eat something? I’m sure the children watching this contest did not notice the pepto bottle but the mothers of the world did. This contest should come with a disclaimer.

I assume the guy thing because short of the occasional uncouth female, we do not eat like that. While guys on the other hand, well they just love to be guys and as much as we detest some of their traits and quirks we love them. This is why you assume we are being nosy.

Whatever the answer I find this to be one of those weird, gross things that cause me to ponder the concept. I worry for whom ever they go home to. I don’t know about you but hotdogs have an ill affect on me.

They give me gas. If ate hotdogs in that fashion, in that quantity, when I got home…

Lets just say I’d be pricing new windows.

Hi, it's not a thing I'd like to try either.....beacause I don't like sausages. Whoever won I wonder how he/she is feeling?

Take care.

IN my younger days I might have been able to eat 3 hot dogs but I would not have done so very fast. Now I can eat 2 but I start getting remorseful once I get to about the 2nd bite of the second hot dog. No eating contests for me unless it's who can eat the slowest. I'm pretty good at that.
