Antique Road Show: What Are These Worth?

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

I am a fan of the Antique Road Show and PBS in general. Have you watched the Road Show? Where people bring in all sorts of family relics in hopes that they too, have some valuable heirloom. Ever thought about what heirlooms you might possess?

Last night while watching the Road Show I began to think about all the so-called heirlooms I now possess. As I recalled the memories of dismantling my great-grandmother and grandmothers house I was stuck on one question, what was my family thinking?

What were they thinking when they collected drawers full of used panty hose? Are we to expect a future shortage or is there something collectible about these panty hose? I hope I’m not blowing an inheritance on my tomato plants.

It seems they also thought KFC plastic dinnerware would be of future value as well. I now am the proud owner of the largest collection of plastic spoons, forks and knives that you have ever seen. My plan was to use this collection as a piece of folk art but should I get appraised first?

I guess coming from the depression they just felt it best to keep everything. I can only now hope I have made the right choices on what has true value.

We recycled enough plastic to ensure that every person in Haiti has at least one plastic bowl. There is now no reason every doctors office in America does not have at least one magazine to read and I have enough retro greeting cards that my nieces and nephews will inherit them.

So I will continue to be a fan of the Antique Road Show and hope someday I find a valuable heirloom in my possession. But until then I will watch for amusement and research, after all I’m waiting to learn the true value of old dentures.

I watch the show occasionally, but only for a few minutes at a time. It's pretty cool what people come in with. Doubtful whether there are any heirlooms in my house or even my mother's house for that matter. Maybe in a hundred years, but I doubt it.

Yvonne,
I"m glad you get it in the UK. We get reruns of "Keeping up Appearances" here, I love Ms. Bucket.

Lee,
Keep searching you never know.

Thanks to both for the comments.
